Julie Anne Guest Buyer –
“Hilarious”. The author will draw you in with his use of the Australian vernacular, colloquialisms, and slang. I especially loved his use of the minutiae of everyday life to bring visuals into play. He brings life to the mundane with his clever use of language to evoke sensory memory, taste, touch , smell. I have laughed, cried, winched in imaginary pain, and even “pardon me” whilst giggling . It has been a journey indeed. Can’t wait to read his next book.

What an amazing debut novel. This book had me laughing, crying and everything in between. The stories that make up this characters ‘One Mad Year’ are hilarious but also resonate so well with everyday life.
Loved it!

Mike is a wordsmith and will leave you crying, laughing and begging for the next page. The main character, Steve’s, seemingly nous approach to the banal tasks are constantly challenged by his wife and have paved the way for a hilarious and empathetic rendition of the everyday person’s life. Filled with Aussie vernacular and relatable tales, this book is definitely worth a read.

This novel grabbed me from the start. It’s not a difficult read and the chapters stand somewhat alone, so it’s like a collection of short stories. I suspect the author was actually drawing a lot from his own life experiences. This tale (or group of tales) is a wonderful reflection of Australian suburban life. The adversarial wife who is always right and self-righteous, the sanctimonious neighbour, the buddies who bait the main character into mischief, the kids who look on with a mix of love and horror, and the dog who snubs our hero’s every move. Any Australian suburbanite will relate to the tales with a mix of empathy and hilarity.
I was also pleased with the flow of the writing and the editing. Froim a first-time author I was amazed that it’s basically flawless and I read the book much quicker than I intended to. I look forward to the sequel.
